Technological Advancement In The Tool Making Process

In order to succeed in Tool Making, one needs to be technically qualified and be very keen as far as detail and quality are concerned. Also it is crucial that one follows the laid down rules and regulations during the process of manufacturing the tools, so as to produce tools that meet the set standards.

It is these tools that will dictate the quality of goods manufactured; hence it is imperative that set standards be adhered to, in order to avoid compromising on quality. The standards set for Tool Making also ensure that the end product are safe for use in manufacturing or other intended purposes.

Initially, machines such as files and manual grinding and polishing machines were used to make tools by hand. Nowadays, advancement in technology has seen the introduction of numerically controlled machines which have made the crafting much easier and faster. These automated machines include grinding, boring and milling machines.

Among the skills that are required of an artisan is the ability to read and deduce technical drawings. They should also be in a position to operate the machines required in crafting the tools such as the lathe machine.

Irrespective of whether one is using the numerically controlled machines or manually crafting, it is crucial that the standard requirements be fully understood and the artisan be as accurate as possible throughout the process to ensure that the end product is of the highest possible quality.

Special attention must be focused on the interpretation of technical drawings, configuration of technical data and the assembly of parts to ensure that the desired shapes and sizes are achieved. The use of CAD and CAM; otherwise known as Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufactures respectively, has gone a long way in improving the accuracy and hence quality in the manufacturing processes and Tool Making.
